Victoria Police Seized $140,000 in Cryptocurrency

In a successful operation this year, Victoria Police confiscated over $140,000 in crypto assets, thanks to the seizure powers granted to them by new laws.

Victoria Police seized $142,679.10 in cryptocurrency as part of a drug dealing investigation, according to their annual report. This was noted as the first successful crypto asset confiscation transaction carried out under the updated laws.

Amendments to the 1997 Seizure Act gave law enforcement the authority to immediately seize cryptocurrency as of August 2023. These law changes are seen as a reflection of growing concerns about tackling crimes related to digital assets.

In particular, the anonymous nature of cryptocurrencies and their potential to be used for illegal transactions have attracted the attention of governments.

The new powers enabled detectives to confiscate assets, including “recovery statements”, during the investigation. Recovery phrases consist of a series of unique words that provide access to digital wallets.

Using these statements, Victoria Police gained access to six separate wallets and obtained various crypto assets. However, details of the specific cryptocurrencies confiscated in the police report were not provided.

This operation highlights the impact of recent changes to the law aimed at preventing crimes related to digital assets. Confiscation of illegal crypto assets has become a growing trend internationally.

Police forces around the world are stepping up efforts to combat illegal use and fraud. However, the latest changes are notable as part of the Australian government’s effort to respond to the growing role of cryptocurrency in illegal activities.

In October, Binance collaborated with the Delhi Police to bust a scam linked to “M/s Goldcoat Solar,” a fake entity in India. This fake organization was committing fraud by establishing fake connections with India’s renewable energy sector.

As a result of the operation, several people were arrested and over $100,000 worth of stablecoins were confiscated. This situation once again revealed the increasing concerns about the use of cryptocurrencies for fraudulent purposes.

During the same period, Hong Kong police busted a deepfake crypto romance scam that victimized individuals in a $46 million scam. This operation resulted in 27 arrests, including college graduates and alleged gang members who created fake trading platforms.

Such operations demonstrate governments’ commitment to preventing crimes related to digital assets.

This operation by Victoria Police demonstrates its impact not only in terms of enforcing laws regarding crypto assets, but also in the fight against illegal uses of digital assets.

With the opportunities offered by new laws, law enforcement aims to prevent the use of crypto assets by criminals. This situation sets an important precedent for future regulation and security of crypto assets.
