Venezuela's Crypto Addiction: Maduro's Election Victory and Economic Crisis

Venezuela's Crypto Addiction: Maduro's Election Victory and Economic Crisis

Venezuela's cryptocurrency addiction has increased significantly in recent years. This trend of the country has been largely shaped by difficult economic conditions, international sanctions and the impact of approximately 8 million citizens who have left the country in the last decade.

Venezuela’s electoral board announced that Nicolas Maduro has been re-elected as the country’s President. However, the opposition also claimed election victory and this attracted the attention of the international community.

Venezuela’s economic crisis and political uncertainties have led to the widespread use of cryptocurrency in the country. Cryptocurrencies offer a store of value and an alternative path to international transactions for Venezuelans facing challenges such as economic uncertainty and hyperinflation.

This shows how important a role cryptocurrencies play in the country’s financial system. As of 2023, Venezuela has received more than $461 million in remittance through cryptocurrency. This reveals that cryptocurrencies have become an important part of financial life in the country.

Venezuela’s state-controlled oil company PDVSA has resorted to using cryptocurrencies such as Tether (USDT) in order to avoid the sanctions imposed by the United States.

However, in January this year, Venezuela was reported to have discontinued the Petro cryptocurrency, which it first launched five years ago. This step reveals the shift in Venezuela’s cryptocurrency strategies and the government’s response to current economic and political pressures.

As for the statements regarding the election results, Maduro’s election officials stated that he won 51% of the votes and opposition candidate Edmundo González received 44%.

However, it has been stated that these results are based on only 80% of the ballot boxes, which means that the election results show an irreversible trend. How Maduro won the elections has been questioned by international observers, and this has led to various discussions.

In his statement about the election results, Maduro claimed that the electoral system was the target of a failed “mass hack” attack by a foreign actor and refused to identify this actor. He also called Argentinian President Javier Milei a “sociopath” and claimed that such criticism was politically motivated.

Milei stated that the Venezuelan people have decided to end Maduro’s dictatorship and that Argentina will not recognize this situation. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that he had serious concerns about the election results, and Republican Senator Marco Rubio from Florida stated that Maduro’s government had carried out “the most predictable and ridiculous election fraud in modern history.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris recognized the outcome of the elections and emphasized that the United States stands with the Venezuelan people and their will should be respected.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the honor and courage of Venezuelans defeated oppression and manipulation. This situation reveals the complex situation that Venezuela is in and the reactions of the international community to this crisis.
