Three Years in Prison for $6.5 Million Sent by Mistake!

Three Years in Prison for $6.5 Million Sent by Mistake!

After a two-year trial, Jatinder Singh was sentenced to three years in prison after Crypto.com mistakenly sent him $6.5 million.

This case attracted attention as a high-profile incident with one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges.

The incident took place in May 2021, and there was a major error in Singh’s transaction to deposit $100 into his Crypto.com account. Singh, a 39-year-old Australian, received some money due to a mismatch with his bank.

The bank account Singh used to deposit $100 to Crypto.com was managed by his partner, Thevamanogari Manivel. However, the name difference between the exchange and the bank account caused the transaction to be rejected. However, a major accounting error by a local staff member resulted in Singh receiving a million-dollar sum in the refund process.

Singh and Manivel accepted this mistakenly obtained money as legitimate payment. Therefore, they quickly transferred the funds to a joint account and decided to spend heavily.

They bought two properties in Melbourne, bought luxury items and also transferred A$4 million to an offshore account in Malaysia. It was claimed that the transferred money was made to ensure its security.

Crypto.com discovered this error seven months later and initiated action to recover the funds. However, the stock exchange and the Commonwealth Bank attempted to contact Singh and Manivel. The couple initially considered these communication attempts as fraud and did not want to communicate. In March 2022, Manivel was arrested by the authorities as he was about to fly to Malaysia, and Singh was also caught soon after.

As a result of this case, Singh was sentenced to three years in prison. During the trial process, the large amount sent by Crypto.com by mistake raised many problems in terms of legal and financial processes. The fact that Singh and Manivel spent the money and hid it safely made the legal implications of the case more complicated.

For financial institutions and crypto exchanges, the incident once again demonstrated the importance of security and accuracy measures that must be taken into consideration during transactions. This case highlighted how critical security protocols and account control mechanisms are, especially when dealing with large amounts.

In addition, it gave important lessons about what consequences such mistakes in the cryptocurrency world can have in legal processes.

In conclusion, Jatinder Singh’s sentence showed that financial mistakes can have serious consequences and how the law works in such cases.

This case is likely to cause cryptocurrency exchanges and financial institutions to review the measures they take and the rigor of their processes to minimize the possibility of errors.
