According to local newspaper Khaosod, the incident resulted in a 31-year-old Russian citizen being attacked and robbed of $20,000 in cash at a hotel in Phuket’s Karon district.

The attackers were identified as acquaintances of the victim and demanded that the victim pay cryptocurrency debts arising from previous trading transactions carried out in Russia.

The police complaint stated that a person identified as “Andrei” as the prime suspect in the incident forced the victim to pay a $120,000 debt and asked the victim to unlock his crypto wallet.

According to the complaint, Andrei threatened the victim, saying he would kill her if she refused to unlock the wallet. The suspects, who encountered the victim’s resistance, beat the victim with violence.

The victim was repeatedly punched and kicked and lost consciousness after receiving a blow to the back of the head. After the incident, the suspects fled with the victim’s cash and left the victim tied up in the bathroom.

Authorities determined that one of the suspects, Andrei, was still in Thailand, while the other suspect, Dmitri, fled to Dubai. Thai police continue to track down the suspects in cooperation with immigration units and local police teams. An arrest warrant has been issued for both suspects.
