Spartacus Project: Afghan War Logs Will Be Engraved on Bitcoin Blockchain

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is taking an important initiative regarding the Spartacus Project, which was launched to engrave the Afghan War Logs into the Bitcoin blockchain.

This project aims to make more than 91,000 documents about the Afghan War published through WikiLeaks between 2004 and 2010 digitally permanent through Bitcoin Ordinals. The project stands out as a digital storage solution to ensure that these documents are not lost and can be accessed in the future.

Afghan War Logs contain a lot of sensitive information about US military operations, such as classified content, civilian casualties, military tactics, and interrogation methods. These documents were published by WikiLeaks in 2010 and had a great impact around the world.

However, the existence of such sensitive content on the internet always carries the risk of loss of access. This situation led Assange and his supporters to launch the “Spartacus Project” in order to make these documents permanent in the digital environment.

Spartacus Project is an initiative that aims to engrave the Afghan War Logs on the Bitcoin blockchain. Through a software called OrdinalsBot, these documents will be immutably placed on the Bitcoin blockchain. The aim of the project is to ensure that this data is kept accessible and secure for many years.

The project is supported by Assange’s supporters and family. Assange Campaign Chairman Gabriel Shipton emphasized the importance of the project and stated that they aim to ensure that the Afghan War Diaries are passed on to future generations.

The project will launch on December 12, 2024 with a free minting process at ProjectSpartacus.org. Users will be able to scrape these documents into the Bitcoin blockchain through OrdinalsBot. Toby Lewis, founder of OrdinalsBot, stated that this process may take time because processing more than 70,000 documents may require a long time.

This minting process is not like a “10K collection” and different blocks will be used throughout the process. The project aims to make access to information permanent, rather than providing financial support to Assange.

The Spartacus Project is considered to be another important step towards digitally preserving the documents Assange previously published through WikiLeaks. In early 2024, after Assange was released from prison, he requested a full pardon from the US government.

The project undertakes a critical task to ensure that the digital data Assange has historically processed is not lost even for a day.

WikiLeaks’ relationship with Bitcoin is also quite remarkable. Assange tried to use Bitcoin to raise funds for WikiLeaks in 2010, but Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, opposed this because of concerns that being associated with WikiLeaks could harm Bitcoin at that time.

In this context, the aim of the Spartacus Project is not only to ensure the safe storage of digital data, but also to ensure the protection of Bitcoin as a digital property.

Spartacus Project takes an important step towards storing digital information securely and permanently. It makes great sense, both in terms of technology and digital rights, to ensure continued worldwide access to historical documents such as the Afghan War Diaries.

With this project, Assange and his supporters once again send an important message for freedom and access to information in the digital world.
