$200,000 Support from Ripple to Trinity College
Trinity College in Dublin has become the first Irish university to join Ripple's University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI).
According to the Irish Independent, Trinity College will launch a comprehensive research initiative at the university’s Adapt Research Ireland Center to study the development of blockchain technology, address the cyber vulnerabilities of cryptocurrencies and develop innovative solutions in financial technologies.
Within the framework of this collaboration, Ripple will provide a total of $ 200,000 in funding to the university for two years. Additionally, Trinity College will run a validator on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), Ripple’s blockchain infrastructure.
This validator will play a critical role in validating transactions on Ripple’s decentralized network, allowing Trinity researchers to support the network’s infrastructure.
Professor Hitesh Tewari, from Trinity College’s School of Computer Science and Statistics, as the leader of the project, said that this initiative will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to develop innovative ideas that can provide solutions to real-world challenges.
Stating that research can start a new era in blockchain-based technologies, Tewari emphasized that this cooperation will also make significant contributions to the global blockchain ecosystem.
One of the projects to be developed within the framework of this initiative will be a decentralized social media platform. This platform will be designed to operate without the need for a central authority, prioritizing users’ data privacy and control. However, detailed information about this innovative project has not yet been shared with the public.
Trinity College plans to organize training programmes, seminars and workshops to ensure the spread of blockchain technology across Ireland.
Lauren Weymouth, Ripple’s University Partnerships Director, stated that Ireland is an important center for the development of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. Weymouth stated that this collaboration with Trinity College fully complies with Ripple’s vision of supporting innovations in the blockchain industry.
Ripple supports academic research, technical innovations and blockchain solutions worldwide with the University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI), which it launched in 2018 with an initial budget of $50 million. To date, UBRI has made significant contributions to the development of the blockchain and cryptocurrency ecosystem by partnering with more than 50 universities in twenty-six countries.
Last year, the University of Toronto, Canada’s largest university, also joined the UBRI program. The university started to conduct studies focusing on innovations in payment systems using Ripple’s XRPL technology.
Like the University of Toronto, Trinity College’s leadership in blockchain technologies could increase Ireland’s global influence in this field.
Trinity College’s participation in UBRI once again demonstrates Ireland’s interest in blockchain technologies and its aim to become a leading center in this field. The university aims to take a leading role in exploring the benefits of blockchain technology and making this technology more accessible both locally and internationally.
The funding and technological support provided by Ripple will play an important role in the university achieving these goals. This collaboration between Trinity College and Ripple provides a powerful example of how academic research can shape the future of blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies.
