Revolution in the Blockchain World with Polygon 2.0!

Revolution in the Blockchain World with Polygon 2.0!

Polygon's AggLayer aims to deliver "infinite scalability" by unifying the blockchain world, says Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon Labs.

Polygon’s ultimate vision is to connect all isolated blockchain networks in the Web3 space and thus create a stronger structure by bringing together fragmented blockchain ecosystems.

To realize this vision, Polygon is focusing on developing an innovative infrastructure called AggLayer, which stands for aggregation layer. AggLayer functions similar to a cross-chain interoperability protocol that aims to connect blockchain networks.

However, according to Marc Boiron, AggLayer does not focus only on a specific ecosystem, but rather aims to bring together all blockchain networks in the Web3 space.

Boiron stated that Polygon 2.0 aims to basically unify all blockchains and increase scalability. According to Boiron, when considering Polygon 2.0, one needs to consider the idea of bundling AggLayer together with the Polygon CDK to enable infinite scalability by combining thematic updates.

This approach means gathering all blockchain networks on a single platform and making this platform accessible to everyone.

Polygon made its token the new Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL) with a significant technical upgrade on September 4. This “hyper-yield” token aims to support the growth and ultimate vision of the network.

The technical migration of the POL token is a critical part of Polygon 2.0, aiming to unify all blockchains as the ultimate evolution of the Polygon CDK and AggLayer. This transition is central to Polygon’s future expansion plans.

Unlike other interoperability solutions, AggLayer does not focus only on its own ecosystem. According to Boiron, AggLayer is on a mission to unify the entire Web3. It’s not just limited to L2s, L1s or Ethereum; It aims to bring literally all blockchain networks together.

This approach represents a significant shift in the current state of the blockchain industry. Because fragmentation between the main L1 blockchains has become a growing problem for crypto users. Bridging operations between networks are both costly and risky in terms of security. Cross-chain vulnerabilities can threaten crypto users’ assets.

Blockchain interoperability is considered one of the industry’s most pressing issues. Since L1 blockchains are isolated systems, they do not have the ability to communicate on their own.

Therefore, cross-chain interoperability solutions have been developed. However, these solutions also present some difficulties. Incompatibility between blockchains makes it difficult to develop cross-chain infrastructure, which can lead to vulnerabilities in third-party protocols.

One example of this is the Orbit Bridge hack incident that occurred in December 2023. Orbit Bridge, developed as a cross-chain interoperability solution, lost $82 million due to an unknown security vulnerability.

The hacker was still at large as of June 2024, during which time he moved $48 million worth of crypto to Tornado Cash. Such incidents highlight the security challenges of cross-chain infrastructure.

These issues have focused the blockchain community’s attention on cross-chain interoperability solutions. Many important blockchain founders are focusing on solving this problem. One of them is Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of Ethereum.

Buterin announced plans to solve cross-chain interoperability issues between Ethereum L2s in August 2024. Such solutions aim to make the blockchain ecosystem more secure and accessible.

The development of AggLayer is of great importance in this context. According to Boiron, AggLayer is taking a step towards unifying the entire Web3 world, rather than just focusing on a specific blockchain ecosystem. This innovation could shape the future structure of the blockchain world and provide a more seamless experience for users.

Polygon’s vision of infinite scalability and unifying all blockchain networks directly addresses the industry’s current challenges. Polygon 2.0 and AggLayer have the potential to revolutionize the Web3 world.
