Poland Overtakes El Salvador in Bitcoin ATMs

Poland made a big splash in terms of Bitcoin ATMs, adding 10 new Bitcoin ATMs on January 27, reaching a total of 219 active machines, surpassing El Salvador and becoming the fifth largest Bitcoin ATM center worldwide.

This Polish achievement was the result of a four-month installation process, which started in October 2024. By increasing the number of crypto ATMs, the country has taken a big step towards increasing interest in Bitcoin and ensuring the accessibility of cryptocurrencies.

Poland’s rapid growth parallels the overall increase in the number of Bitcoin ATMs worldwide. According to Bitcoin ATM Radar data, leading countries such as Canada, Spain and Australia are also seeing an increase in the number of active Bitcoin ATMs every month.

While this increase enables Bitcoin acceptance to become more widespread, especially in developed economies, Poland’s rapid growth shows that the cryptocurrency infrastructure is expanding in Europe and the country has made serious progress in digital money adoption. Poland’s advances in this regard have gained remarkable momentum compared to other countries.

While Poland continues to install Bitcoin ATMs, other countries are also accelerating the installation of crypto ATMs. Australia stands out as the country that has recorded the most consistent growth in the number of crypto ATMs over the last three years.

Australia achieved the feat of having over 1,000 Bitcoin ATMs in April 2024, thus joining this club along with the United States and Canada. This growth is considered a major step towards increasing social acceptance of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

While crypto ATMs do not have a direct impact on local Bitcoin acceptance, these machines provide important infrastructure. While crypto ATMs enable the public to become acquainted with Bitcoin and other digital assets, they also play an important role in serving the unbanked segments.

Crypto ATMs enable users to easily buy or sell digital assets, contributing to the popularization of Bitcoin.

However, with the proliferation of crypto ATMs, some regulators have raised concerns about the potential for these machines to be used for illegal activities such as money laundering and terrorism financing.

This has led governments and regulators to strengthen their view that cryptocurrency infrastructure should be regulated. Despite this, Bitcoin ATMs remain an important tool to facilitate access to cryptocurrency and provide greater accessibility for users around the world.

After accepting Bitcoin as the official currency in 2022, El Salvador was on its way to having one of the largest Bitcoin ATM networks in the world by rapidly increasing the number of Bitcoin ATMs in the country.

However, El Salvador did not see an increase in Bitcoin ATM capacity, causing countries such as Poland to come to the fore. El Salvador ranked third by installing 215 Bitcoin ATMs in 2022, but this ranking changed with Poland’s fast installation process and increasing interest.

Poland’s rapid growth in Bitcoin ATMs once again highlights how the worldwide cryptocurrency ecosystem is evolving and the importance of crypto ATMs in making Bitcoin accessible to a wider audience.

Poland’s success in this field serves as an example for other countries and offers clues on how the cryptocurrency infrastructure will spread around the world.
