BPNG has moved to the new stage in CBDC trial

The Central Bank of Papua has successfully completed the trial process of the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) and has taken the next steps for digital payments beyond national borders.

These steps, which are taken to modernize the country’s digital payment systems and increase financial participation, mean participation in the global central bank digital currency trend.

Papua’s new Guinea Central Bank (BPNG), CBDC trial, Japanese blockchain development company Soramitsu, Mitsubishi, JICA and Japanese government. This trial aims to test how the country’s central bank digital currency could work.

The Central Bank started tests with targets such as increasing the efficiency of the digital currency, strengthening security and encouraging financial participation. Bank President Elizabeth Genia was a critical step to eliminate the deficiencies in the financial system and to make digital payments more accessible.

In 2018, Genia also mentioned that they were a joint sponsors to the London Blockchain Week and that they have been creating a regulatory sand pool for Digital Identity Solutions and FinTech since then.

The CBDC trial was implemented by transactions in a sand pool in order to examine the applicability of the digital currency at the national level. This process provided an important opportunity to understand the benefits and potential challenges of the digital currency.

However, BPNG emphasizes that some legal and regulatory gaps should be eliminated in order to expand the CBDC on a large scale.

Papua Yeni Guinea Central Bank plans to expand the scope of its future work. In collaboration with more financial institutions, it is aimed to test the CBDC in a wider area and to discover cross -border payments with neighboring countries.

This will be an important step especially for regional digital currency solutions. The central government is expected to conduct serious work to make the digital currency not only on a national scale but also internationally used.

Soramitsu’s role in developing CBDC has achieved great success in 2020 with the same solution in Cambodia. In Cambodia, CBDC has opened more than 10 million accounts as of December 2023 and reached a user audience covering 60 %of the country’s population.

Soramitsu uses Cambodian experience as an important resource to adapt to the implementation process in Papua New Guinea.

At the end of these studies, BPNG aims to make Papua new Guinea an important player in digital payment systems. The Central Bank believes that the digital currency has the potential to transform both local economy and regional digital payment systems.

However, the dissemination of the CBDC needs to be strengthened by the country’s legal infrastructure and regulatory framework.

Papua New Guinea Central Bank’s CBDC work, the participation of the regional and global digital payments system stands out as an important step. These tests at the national level offer significant opportunities to modernize the country’s financial system and are considered a significant step towards increasing financial participation.
