Paycoin Ends VASP Service in South Korea

Paycoin Ends VASP Service in South Korea

PayProtocol AG, as the issuer of Paycoin, has made an important decision and announced its plan to terminate the virtual asset custody service for the Paycoin application in South Korea.

This decision of the company is due to the difficulties experienced in the local regulatory environment in the country. These challenges, in particular, have prevented the resumption of PCI’s payment services since February 2023.

PayProtocol AG will therefore not renew its Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration, which will expire in April 2025, and will instead choose to focus on the international payment ecosystem.

South Korea is going through a very complex process in terms of cryptocurrency regulations. In July 2023, local authorities discussed that the 20% crypto profits tax should be postponed until 2028, following concerns from the crypto community.

These discussions arose due to factors such as negative effects on the market and lack of adequate institutional preparations.

This uncertainty further deepens the challenges companies like Paycoin face in local markets. Obstacles imposed by local regulations limit companies’ ability to do business, which pushes them to turn to foreign markets that are under less regulatory pressure.

Paycoin has taken important steps abroad. The company has collaborated with international retailers such as Apple, Shake Shack and Swarovski by launching a global application that enables PCI payments.

This app provides users with a wider range of payment options, increasing the ability to trade internationally. In particular, such collaborations are considered an important step towards Paycoin becoming a global brand.

PayProtocol AG has also acquired a presence in Lithuania and obtained VASP status, supporting its expansion ambitions in crypto-friendly jurisdictions.

This strategy aims to grow in regions with more favorable legal frameworks, avoiding the uncertainties brought by local regulations. While this strengthens Paycoin’s presence abroad, it also ensures greater acceptance in international markets.

Paycoin’s decision to terminate VASP registration relates not only to the company’s strategic direction but also to the effects of uncertainties in South Korea’s cryptocurrency ecosystem.

Although native wallet services will end in the process, the company will continue to use other features such as Wallet Connect and Paycoin Shopping. This will continue to offer Paycoin users the ability to manage and use their assets for a certain period of time.

April 21, 2025 was specified as an important date for users. While withdrawals for PCI and other assets are supported until this date, new wallet creation and investments will end on September 27, 2024.

Users will be able to continue using the Paycoin application, but there is a need to adapt to new regulations.

This decision of PayProtocol AG is closely related to the market dynamics as well as the company’s international expansion strategy. The uncertainties in the South Korean market and the difficulties of local regulations cause the company to turn its direction to international markets.

This is considered as part of Paycoin’s effort to increase its competitiveness on a global scale.

This decision by PayProtocol AG provides important clues not only about the company’s strategic direction, but also about the future of the cryptocurrency ecosystem in South Korea.

The company’s expansion into international markets is a reflection of its effort to create more opportunities on a global scale, as well as to cope with domestic uncertainties. Paycoin’s global presence and role in international payments will gain even more importance in the coming period.
