Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' Presidential Race: Polymarket Forecasts and Investor Reactions

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' Presidential Race: Polymarket Forecasts and Investor Reactions

President Joe Biden has stated that he plans to stay in the race, but also emphasized that "it is important to calm fears." The announcement comes as Biden's chances of becoming the Democratic Party's presidential nominee edged ahead of vice president Kamala Harris after her first press conference in months, according to investors at crypto-based prediction market platform Polymarket.

At Polymarket, Biden’s chances of becoming the nominee rose from 33% to 51%, but that rate has recently fallen back to 45%. These fluctuations show the impact of uncertainties about Biden’s political future on investors.

On the same platform, Kamala Harris’ odds of winning the nomination dropped to 37%, but rose again to 42% as of press time. This shows that Harris is still seen as a strong candidate, but Biden’s performance at the press conference is in her favor.

Polymarket rates Biden’s chance of victory in November at 13%, compared to 15% for Harris. These low odds indicate that both candidates face serious challenges with voters and investors. Former President and likely Republican candidate Donald Trump remains the favorite to win the White House.

“Yes” shares in the contract for Trump on Polymarket traded at 61 cents and will pay $1 per share (USDC, a stablecoin or cryptocurrency pegged to the dollar) if he wins and nothing if he doesn’t, meaning the market gives him a 61% chance of winning.

Biden tumbled his words several times during the press conference and mistakenly called Harris “Vice President Trump.” These gaffes raised concerns about his age and cognitive health.

But he spoke in depth on foreign policy issues after the NATO summit, his voice approaching near shouting when talking about the shooting deaths of American children. This passionate speech showed that he was still on top of the issues and showed strong leadership.

Concerns about his age and cognitive health have led to widespread calls among prominent Democrats and donors, including actor George Clooney, for the president to step aside. However, Biden insists that he will stay in the race. This situation shows the tensions within the party and the testing of confidence in Biden’s leadership abilities.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are bet on the election outcome at Polymarket, and the platform is having a successful year despite having to limit U.S. users under a regulatory agreement. The platform’s bets are programmed as smart contracts on the Polygon blockchain.

While this ensures the market is transparent and trustworthy, it also demonstrates the increasing role of cryptocurrencies in financial markets.

Biden’s determination to remain in the nomination race, his discussions within the party, and his leadership on foreign policy issues show that his political future remains uncertain.

However, the reactions of investors in Polymarket indicate that Biden is still a strong candidate and continues to play an important role in the eyes of voters. In this dynamic and volatile political environment, the performances of Biden and Harris will have a significant impact on the future of the Democratic Party.
