Cardano DDoS Attack Security Victory or Strategic Game?

The Cardano blockchain experienced an event that created excitement in the cryptocurrency markets on Tuesday, June 25. The network faced a denial of service attack (DDoS). In this type of attack, the attacker aims to prevent access by normal users by flooding the target server or blockchain with an excessive amount of unnecessary transactions or data. This may cause network congestion and services to stop.

Although it seemed like a serious threat at first glance, this incident turned into a security victory for Cardano. The attack was intervened quickly and effectively and was prevented before any damage was caused. This demonstrated the robustness of Cardano’s security architecture and the responsiveness of the community behind it.

So how exactly did the attack occur and how was it prevented? Fluid Token CTO @ElRaulito_cnft found that the attack started at block 10,487,530 and that the attacker attempted to overwhelm the network by executing 194 smart contracts on each transaction. Although it is not known exactly what these smart contracts serve, it was clear that they were trying to cause the network to become congested by overloading its transaction capacity.

It was determined that the attacker spent 0.9 ADA per transaction. This suggested that the attacker either made a costly attempt by spending a significant amount of ADA or took over a large number of accounts to carry out the attack.

However, this attack was neutralized thanks to the swift action of Cardano’s strong developer community. Philip Disarro, founder of Cardano development company Anastasia, stated that the DDoS attack can be stopped immediately by deleting the staking credential used by the attacker from the network.

This staking authority works as an authentication mechanism that allows the attacker to control the ADA they stake into the network. The attack ended immediately after the staking authority was deleted from the network upon Disarro’s suggestion.

Disarro’s tweet points to another interesting aspect of the incident. Disarro states that he stopped the attack after reading the attacker’s tweet to protect his funds, but it was too late and the attacker had already lost some of his funds. This can be interpreted as the attacker’s goal is not to steal but to bring down the network.

Later, a Cardano developer also weighed in on this comment and explained that the main goal of the attack was not to steal staked tokens, but to disrupt the network. This information somewhat clarifies the motivation behind the attack. Some experts suggest that the attack may have been a sabotage attempt by Cardano’s competitors. However, it should be noted that these claims have not been proven yet.
