Investors Shifted from Bitcoin to Altcoins

Investors Shifted from Bitcoin to Altcoins

According to recent data, crypto investors have started to turn to high beta altcoins. This trend is especially evident in South Korea-based crypto exchanges.

Investors in South Korean exchanges seem to be influenced by optimistic analyst forecasts regarding the latest US interest rate cut, shifting from Bitcoin (BTC) to alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins). Data tracked by 10x Research shows that this transition indicates a serious market move.

To understand this situation, crypto analysis firm CryptoQuant’s Bitcoin Korea Premium Index offers an important indicator. This index measures the difference between Bitcoin prices on Korean exchanges and prices on overseas exchanges.

On Wednesday, this index fell to -0.55, meaning Bitcoin appears to be losing value in the Korean market. This represents the index’s deepest decline since October 2023. While Bitcoin’s transaction volume in Korea is decreasing, it is observed that investors are turning to higher risk and volatile altcoins.

Another data confirming this transition from Bitcoin to altcoins in Korean stock markets is the change in daily transaction volumes. In a chart shared by 10x Research, daily Korean trading volumes and the most traded pairs every day in the last 40 days were examined.

This chart shows that investors have recently shifted from the Bitcoin-Korean won (BTC/KRW) pair to altcoins such as UXLINK, CKB, ARK, and PENDLE. The decline in Bitcoin’s popularity in Korea has led investors to turn to altcoins that offer higher return potential.

This trend in South Korea is not just a local situation; A similar movement is observed worldwide. Crypto investors are focusing more on altcoin markets, thinking that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will make further interest rate cuts in the coming months.

The Fed’s interest rate cut creates a new revival in the altcoin market by increasing the demand for risky assets.

One of the reasons behind this shift is that investors see higher return potential in altcoins. High beta altcoins can fluctuate greatly during both bullish and bearish periods as they are more sensitive to general movements of the market.

This means both opportunity and risk for investors. Especially professional and fast-moving traders are turning to the altcoin market to turn this volatility into an opportunity.

Markus Thielen, founder of 10x Research, states that investors are turning to altcoins to take advantage of these opportunities.

“As Bitcoin passes the $60,000 level and heads towards $65,000, smart investors are picking up altcoins they think are undervalued,” Thielen said in a note to clients on Wednesday. Thielen emphasized that altcoins such as TAO, ENA, SEI, APT, SUI, NEAR and GRT attracted attention in this period.

Despite Bitcoin’s strong performance, this movement in altcoins shows that investors are implementing a diversification strategy. Because altcoin markets are less liquid and volatile compared to Bitcoin, large price movements present attractive opportunities for investors.

While investors’ interest in altcoins is shaped in parallel with the general mood of the market, this trend is expected to continue for the rest of the year. Especially if the Fed’s interest rate cuts continue, more activity may be seen in the altcoin market.

Behind the transition from Bitcoin to altcoins in crypto markets lies investors’ search for higher returns. The fact that investors in South Korean exchanges are turning to high beta altcoins is in line with the general trend in the global crypto market.
