Gambaryan in Court in a Wheelchair!
Tigran Gambaryan, a senior employee of US-based cryptocurrency exchange Binance, was brought to court in a wheelchair for his final hearing at a court in the Nigerian capital Abuja on July 16.
Gambaryan’s legal process in Nigeria constitutes an important case in terms of the protection of international law and human rights. His family released a statement saying Gambaryan “was not provided adequate access to his legal team and his health was rapidly deteriorating.”
The hearing was held on July 16, after which the court was adjourned. The next hearing was set for October 11. Gambaryan’s legal team has not been able to meet with their client in Kuje prison since July 26, and Gambaryan is now completely bedridden.
His family states that Gambaryan’s legal team was unable to mount an effective defense due to inadequate health conditions and legal access problems. Additionally, Gambaryan’s lawyers filed an application requesting that the case be handled during the holiday period.
Tigran Gambaryan’s case has not received much attention from local authorities such as Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Binance, SEC and EFCC have not yet made a statement on this issue.
Gambaryan’s family states that the prison authorities decided to continue his detention regardless of hospital records, despite the court order. Gambaryan’s herniated disc in his back requires high-risk surgery.
Additionally, he had to have his tonsils removed due to the throat infections and pneumonia he suffered in Kuje prison. Due to his health condition, he has to take blood thinners to prevent blood clots.
This difficult process that Gambaryan went through led members of the US Congress to request assistance from President Joe Biden’s administration to bring Gambaryan back to the United States. Gambaryan, a former Internal Revenue Service agent and Binance’s current head of financial crimes compliance, was detained after he voluntarily went to Nigeria in February.
Gambaryan, who maintained his innocence against the money laundering charges he was involved in, attracted attention when the tax charges he was previously facing were dropped in June. This situation raises important questions in terms of international law and human rights.
Gambaryan’s case provides an important example of how justice and health rights should be protected at the international level. Gambaryan’s family is seeking international support to protect their client’s health and legal rights.
It is emphasized that the international community should take a more careful and supportive stance regarding a fair trial and access to health conditions.
In this context, Gambaryan’s case provides an important lesson about the operation of international law in cross-border legal matters and highlights the importance of more effective involvement of the international community.
