Gambaryan's Health Problems Increase During Detention in Nigeria
Tigran Gambaryan's family is greatly concerned about the health problems he experienced during his detention in Nigeria.
Gambaryan, Binance’s senior executive, has been held in Nigeria for six months and, according to his family, his health condition is constantly deteriorating. The family claims that Gambaryan suffered serious distress due to untreated medical problems and describes this as medical negligence.
Gambaryan was arrested by authorities in Nigeria on charges of money laundering, currency speculation and tax evasion. These accusations relate to some of his activities while performing his duties at Binance. However, Gambaryan’s health condition seriously deteriorated during the detention period.
According to his family, Gambaryan was unable to walk due to an untreated hernia or spinal injury. This caused him to be unable to move around and perform daily living activities in prison.
The prison allegedly refused to provide Gambaryan with a wheelchair, further restricting his mobility. It is stated that due to his inability to move, Gambaryan had to regularly use blood thinners to prevent blood clots.
The family claims that Nigerian authorities did not allow Gambaryan’s legal team to visit, and that this situation is against both legal and constitutional rights. From July 26 to August 14, Gambaryan’s legal team was unable to enter the prison, and Gambaryan’s defense could not be prepared during this time. Such restrictions do not appear to comply with Nigeria’s legal and prison regulations.
In the end, authorities granted Gambaryan’s legal team only a five-minute visit, but that visit was subsequently blocked again. It is also stated that Gambaryan had difficulty getting support from the American embassy due to the lack of a wheelchair.
Gambaryan’s health condition caused him to suffer from severe tonsillitis due to malaria and pneumonia that were left untreated for a long time. Doctors said his tonsils needed to be surgically removed.
Before his detention, the Nigerian government invited Gambaryan to a meeting and during the meeting he was asked to surrender his passport. Later, Gambaryan was placed in a “guesthouse”. During this process, various financial accusations were made against Gambaryan regarding Binance.
The family stated that Gambaryan’s medical records were repeatedly refused to be shared with both his legal team and the American embassy, which led to an arrest warrant for the Nigerian prison doctor. This legal battle made it difficult for Gambaryan to communicate with his legal representatives and the embassy.
Nigeria’s plans to issue licenses for cryptocurrency exchanges are also on the agenda. The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission has announced its intention to license cryptocurrency exchanges. SEC Director General Emomotimi Agama stated that this development will happen soon and will play an important role in Nigeria’s cryptocurrency market. Nigeria’s influence and regulation on the cryptocurrency industry reinforces the country’s role in the global cryptocurrency ecosystem.
