Singh's Sentencing in FTX Crash Will Be Announced on October 30
Nishad Singh will appear in court and be sentenced on October 30 for his role in the collapse of the FTX exchange.
Critical information Singh provided in the investigations against his former employers, Sam Bankman-Fried and Ryan Salame, formed the basis of the charges related to the FTX collapse.
Singh pleaded guilty to six separate charges in February 2023 and cooperated with authorities from the beginning of the case. His collaboration played a major role in the lawsuit against FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and FTX Digital Markets CEO Ryan Salame.
As Singh’s sentencing hearing approached, his lawyers filed an application asking the court not to sentence Singh to prison.
In the document they submitted to the US Southern District of New York on October 16, Singh’s lawyers emphasized that their client’s role in the events was more limited compared to other defendants.
Lawyers stated that Singh admitted his crimes at the beginning of the case, did not belittle his actions, and would regret these actions throughout his life. But they stated that his sentence should take into account his late participation in the conspiracy at the center of events at FTX - the theft of FTX customer funds.
It was also emphasized that Singh was involved in this conspiracy in September 2022, and that this date coincided with just two months before the collapse of FTX. This was presented as a mitigating factor for his role in the events.
The application submitted to the court stated that Singh not only admitted his crimes, but also co-operated with the authorities and presented evidence immediately after FTX announced that it would go bankrupt.
Following the bankruptcy, Singh flew to New York and met with government officials, and the information he provided was crucial in helping the government file a lawsuit against Sam Bankman-Fried and Ryan Salame. In the court filing, it was stated that the evidence provided by Singh played a critical role in bringing Bankman-Fried and Salame to justice.
Singh pleaded guilty to six charges, including fraud and conspiracy, in February 2023. Testifying against Sam Bankman-Fried in October 2023, Singh provided key testimony against his former employer. Bankman-Fried was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in March 2024 and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Caroline Ellison, Bankman-Fried’s ex-girlfriend and CEO of Alameda Research, was sentenced to two years in prison on similar charges. Ryan Salame, CEO of FTX Digital Markets, was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to operate an unauthorized money transfer and defraud the Federal Election Commission.
Whether Singh will receive a prison sentence or not will be determined at the hearing on October 30. Former FTX chief technology officer Gary Wang, who is on trial alongside him, is also expected to appear in court on November 20.
These cases are among the major developments as part of ongoing investigations into FTX’s financial collapse and the illegal activities of exchange executives. Singh’s cooperation may be considered a mitigating factor compared to other defendants in the FTX case; However, the final decision will be made by the court.
