Robbery Incident in Bangkok Before Ethereum Devcon

Robbery Incident in Bangkok Before Ethereum Devcon

Haichao Zhu, co-founder of Rooch Network, who traveled to Bangkok to attend the 2024 Ethereum Devcon Conference, came to the fore when he was robbed at knifepoint in the capital of Thailand.

While the incident raised security concerns in the crypto industry, Zhu issued a warning to Devcon attendees on social media platform X following the incident. In his post dated November 5, Zhu stated that he was attacked when he arrived alone in Bangkok late at night.

He said the attackers stole his phone, leaving a slight scratch on his hand, and expressed disappointment with local police following the incident. Zhu, who reported the situation to the Bangkok police, stated that he spent the night at the police station but could not get any results.

Zhu’s post serves as a warning for other crypto enthusiasts who will attend Devcon.

Stating that the participants should be more careful in the city, especially late at night, Zhu said, “Bangkok is still a safe and fun city like other places, but you should be careful about darkness.”

This warning of Zhu attracted attention both in the crypto community and among those who will attend the event.

Jole Star, the other co-founder of Rooch Network, also made a statement about the incident. In a separate X post, Star said that he and Zhu planned to reach out to shops near the scene and review security camera footage, but noted that it might be difficult to identify the attackers.

Star also advised Devcon attendees to avoid walking around alone at night and using phones while walking. He stated that with these measures, he aims to increase the security of those participating in crypto events.

The increasing popularity of cryptocurrencies and the targeting of digital asset holders reveal the need for more security measures.

Ethereum Devcon, the Ethereum Foundation’s largest annual event, will kick off on November 12 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. Focusing on the development of decentralized finance and blockchain technologies, the event will bring together the most prominent names in the industry.

The event, which will be attended by pioneers in decentralized technology such as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum Foundation general manager Aya Miyaguchi and Portugal’s former secretary Bruno Macaes, is preparing to host thousands of visitors and participants from around the world.

This incident in Bangkok is actually considered as a reflection of increasing security concerns in crypto events. Such events are not exclusive to Devcon; A similar attack took place during the Ethereum Community Conference held in Brussels in July.

Kilt Protocol growth lead and conference attendee Rishant Kumar had a similar experience in Brussels and issued a warning about “goons targeting crypto people.” Kumar stated that he survived the attack, but pointed out the importance of security for those working in the crypto industry.

The increase in attacks against the crypto community is considered a trend. In August, eleven tourists from Israel were attacked and $700,000 worth of Bitcoin was stolen. In another crypto-related incident in July, a 29-year-old was killed after attackers forced him to transfer approximately 3 Bitcoins.

Such incidents show that the crypto industry needs to take security measures and that it is important for crypto holders to be vigilant to protect themselves. While major events such as Devcon bring together global crypto enthusiasts, such attacks once again bring to the fore the need to ensure security.
