Detroit Will Offer the Opportunity to Pay Taxes with Cryptocurrency

Detroit Will Offer the Opportunity to Pay Taxes with Cryptocurrency

Detroit has announced efforts to “modernize and improve” payment channels as part of its decision to accept cryptocurrency for taxes and other city services.

Starting in mid-2025, the city will offer residents the opportunity to pay taxes and other city fees with cryptocurrency. This step aims to encourage Detroit’s adoption of blockchain technology and attract blockchain companies to the city.

Crypto payment options will be offered through a “secure payment platform” managed by PayPal, Detroit’s Treasury said in a statement on Nov. 7.

It is not yet clear which cryptocurrencies Detroit will accept, but PayPal supports major crypto assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin and its own stablecoin, PayPal USD.

Detroit officials stated that this step is part of efforts to modernize payment systems in the city and also aims to attract blockchain companies to the city. The city plans to take part in innovative developments in this sector by offering its residents the option of paying with cryptocurrency.

“Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers its residents and entrepreneurs. We are excited to be one of the major cities in the U.S. to explore public applications of blockchain and enable our residents to use their cryptocurrencies as a payment option,” Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said in a statement. he said.

This statement was an open invitation to the city’s future blockchain initiatives.

Detroit will also ask blockchain entrepreneurs to submit their “ideas for blockchain public applications,” allowing innovative projects in this field to be brought to the city. It was announced that applications to be made by December 15 should be submitted by contacting the city via e-mail.

Justin Onwenu, Detroit’s Director of Economic Opportunities and Entrepreneurship, stated that blockchain technologies can provide greater accessibility, efficiency, transparency and security, and emphasized that they are looking forward to projects from entrepreneurs in this field.

Detroit’s move to accept crypto payment options reflects a growing trend, along with other cities in the US, to accept crypto for tax and utility payments.

Cities such as Miami Lakes (Florida) and Willston (South Dakota) already accept payments in crypto. Colorado and Louisiana also accept cryptocurrency, albeit to a limited extent, often through third-party payment providers such as PayPal or BitPay.

This initiative by Detroit also comes after US President Donald Trump’s crypto-friendly approach. After Trump was elected President, he raised expectations that proactive policies and regulatory clarity would be provided towards the cryptocurrency industry.

This has sparked a lot of interest in the crypto world as there are rumors that the Trump administration is planning to oust current SEC Chairman Gary Gensler and create a national Bitcoin reserve.

Detroit’s move to accept crypto as a means of payment is an important step toward the city’s goal of creating a tech-friendly environment. The city aims to support technological innovation by attracting blockchain companies to the city. This initiative could also contribute to Detroit’s future economic growth.
