Crypto Donations to the Harris Campaign: Collaboration with Future Forward PAC
A Coinbase spokesperson revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris is accepting crypto donations through its Future Forward PAC rather than directly to her campaign.
It is stated that Coinbase (COIN) official Alesia Haas’s statement that she directly accepted crypto donations to Harris’ campaign was misunderstood or unclear.
In his speech at the Citigroup event on Wednesday, Haas said, “Harris is accepting donations” and made a statement saying, “He is now using Coinbase Commerce to accept crypto for his campaign.” Fortune first announced the details of this statement.
However, a Coinbase spokesperson stated that Haas was referring to the Future Forward USA PAC, not Harris’ campaign. “Coinbase can confirm that Future Forward PAC has reached an agreement with Coinbase Commerce to accept crypto donations,” the spokesperson told CoinDesk.
Future Forward PAC is a political action committee supporting Harris and accepting crypto donations through this committee. Harris’ direct campaign is not currently taking crypto contributions.
Harris’ rival in the presidential election, Donald Trump, gained support from crypto enthusiasts and companies and gained significant mass support with this support. The support Trump has received from the crypto industry may have given him a significant advantage in the election campaign. This shows that politicians who have a positive approach towards cryptocurrencies can receive the support of the crypto industry.
On the other hand, the current presidential administration in which Harris served was criticized for having a negative attitude towards cryptocurrencies, and these criticisms created discomfort in the crypto industry. In this context, crypto donations made through the Future Forward PAC may be a sign for those questioning whether there is a shift in Democrats’ approach to cryptocurrencies.
Future Forward PAC is a first-time hybrid PAC for President Joe Biden. This type of PAC has the ability to both contribute directly to the campaign and fund independent advertising without coordinating with the campaign.
This increases PACs’ flexibility in campaign financing and strengthens their potential to exert influence through independent advertising. This flexibility can also play an important role in support campaigns for cryptocurrencies.
Harris’ campaign website does not currently offer an option to donate with crypto. Additionally, the advocacy group Crypto4Harris stated in a statement to Fortune that they were not aware of any developments regarding Harris’s start accepting crypto donations. This indicates that crypto donations have not yet been implemented in Harris’s direct campaign, and Future Forward PAC is playing a leading role in this regard.
Acceptance of crypto donations could have a significant impact on the financing strategies of political campaigns. These developments could accelerate the integration of the crypto industry into mainstream politics and make the role of the crypto industry more prominent in future elections. Increasing interest and support for cryptocurrencies can be effective in shaping policies, and such developments can be considered an important step in the process of integrating the crypto industry into politics.
