Crypto and Credit Card Use in Gambling in Australia is History!

Crypto and Credit Card Use in Gambling in Australia is History!

The Australian government has taken a new step to protect its citizens from overspending and potential debt. With the regulation that came into force on June 11, the use of crypto money and credit cards was banned on online gambling platforms. This decision is considered an important step to promote responsible gaming and ensure the financial security of citizens.

According to the Canberra Times newspaper, companies that do not comply with the new regulations will face severe sanctions. The government has the power to impose fines of around A$234,750 (about $155,000) on companies that break the rules. The ban includes credit cards linked to digital wallets, leading cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, and other new types of loans.

This new regulation aligns with existing Australian laws regarding land-based gambling. However, there are some exceptions, such as online lottery payments where credit cards are still allowed.

Kai Cantwell, CEO of Responsible Wagering Australia, the independent organization representing Australian licensed gambling service providers, welcomed the new regulation. Cantwell believes this decision will make it easier for people to control themselves and gamble responsibly. He said in his statement:

“This is a vital measure to protect customers. It will make it easier for people to keep their own gambling behavior under control.”

Cantwell is calling on the government to extend the ban to all forms of gambling. It expresses concern that if safeguards are not applied consistently across all types of gambling, people may turn to less regulated and higher-risk forms of gambling.

The gambling industry received a six-month transition period to adapt. The full ban came into force on June 11. The country’s communications oversight agency has been given the power to monitor implementation of new regulations and punish violations.

This decision is not expected to affect only traditional gambling habits. It is likely to have significant repercussions among cryptocurrency users. Because cryptocurrencies are frequently used for betting in different areas, from the newest memecoins to the validation of exchange traded funds. For example, in January, betting platform Polymarket users gambled $12 million on the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the US. Similarly, millions of dollars were bet on the approval of spot Ether exchange-traded funds in March.

Although banning the use of cryptocurrencies is seen as a disadvantage for some, it is considered an important step taken to promote responsible gaming and protect the financial security of citizens.

This decision by Australia may pave the way for other countries to introduce similar regulations in the future. This could lead to significant changes in both the online gambling industry and the use of cryptocurrency. This issue needs to be followed closely in the coming period and it needs to be seen how other countries will respond to Australia’s move.
