Cross-Border Payments with mBridge!

Cross-Border Payments with mBridge!

The Central Bank of Saudi Arabia has taken an important step in the field of digital currency (CBDC) by becoming a full participant in mBridge, a project that aims to accelerate and facilitate international trade and payments. This project was launched in 2021 by the Switzerland-based Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and recently reached the minimum viable product (MVP) stage.

The mBridge Project is an innovative initiative that uses a decentralized blockchain network (mBridge Ledger) implemented in collaboration between central banks of different countries. This project aims to solve the problems faced by the traditional international payments system.

These problems are: International payments are often a slow and time-consuming process due to intermediaries and different currencies. Transactions can take days to complete, creating a costly and inefficient situation for businesses and consumers.

Traditional international payments can be subject to high costs due to intermediary banks and exchange rate fees. This situation poses a significant obstacle, especially for small and medium-sized businesses. International payment processes are often complex and opaque. Transactions can be difficult to track and it can become difficult to track where funds are going.

The mBridge Project aims to find solutions to these problems by taking advantage of the speed, security and transparency of blockchain technology.

Blockchain technology makes it possible to process international payments almost instantly. This allows businesses to receive and settle payments faster and speed up the trade cycle. mBridge aims to significantly reduce the cost of payments by reducing the need for intermediary banks and reducing exchange rate fees.

This will be especially useful for lower volume transactions. All transactions on mBridge Ledger are recorded transparently and visible to all participants. This makes it easier to track transactions and reduces the risk of fraud.

Saudi Arabia’s participation in the mBridge Project is considered an important development. This demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to adopting innovative solutions in the field of payments. It also increases the global scope and impact of the project

Besides Saudi Arabia, the central banks of China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are currently full participants in the mBridge Project. In addition, 27 official institutions, including the central banks of countries such as Norway, South Korea and Turkey, are following the project as observers. This increases the global scope and impact of the project.

The mBridge Project is not carried out only with the participation of public institutions. BIS is calling on private sector financial institutions to be involved in the project. Major global financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, HSBC and China’s six largest state-owned banks, are involved in the project. This collaboration will enable the development of innovative solutions that will accelerate the adoption of CBDCs and blockchain technology.

The mBridge Project, although still in its early stages, is seen as a promising initiative. The success of the project could lead to international trade and payments becoming faster, cheaper and more transparent. This could increase global trade volume and create new opportunities for businesses.

However, the project also faces some challenges. Regulatory harmonization will need to be achieved between central banks of different countries. Additionally, concerns regarding the scalability and security of blockchain technology must also be addressed.

As a result, the mBridge Project could be an important step for the future of international trade. The success of the project could lead to the acceleration of digital transformation in financial systems and the beginning of a new era in the global economy. Saudi Arabia’s participation in the project is considered an important part of this transformation.

As next steps, the pilot implementation of the project is expected to begin and be tested in real-world scenarios. It is anticipated that the private sector will be more involved in the project and develop innovative solutions. Regulators need to establish clear rules regarding the use of CBDCs.

It will be useful to observe the course of digital transformation of international trade by closely following the future developments of the mBridge Project.
