Caroline Ellison Will Start Serving Her FTX Sentence on November 7

Caroline Ellison Will Start Serving Her FTX Sentence on November 7

Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison was released on bail after pleading guilty in 2022 and testified in Sam Bankman-Fried's criminal trial.

Ellison was heavily followed by the media. Caroline Ellison is expected to surrender to prison on November 7 to serve a two-year sentence for her role in crimes at cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

At the time of publication, the Federal Administration of Prisons (BOP) website stated that Ellison was not in custody but provided an inmate number and age, race and gender information. On September 24, United States District Court Judge Lewis Kaplan for the Southern District of New York sentenced Ellison to two years in prison and ordered him to surrender before November 7.

According to Judge Kaplan, the BOP requested that Ellison surrender to a correctional facility before 2:00 pm ET on November 7. The former Alameda CEO is expected to surrender to a low-security prison near Boston, suggesting he could serve out his sentence at Danbury Federal Prison in Connecticut.

Danbury houses both male and female inmates. Ellison will be the third person to be sentenced following the case in which FTX and Alameda executives are defendants.

He will surrender following the trial and conviction of former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and the guilty plea of former FTX Digital Marketing CEO Ryan Salame. In October, Judge Kaplan granted former FTX engineering director Nishad Singh time to count towards his sentence.

Following the collapse of FTX in 2022, Ellison pleaded guilty to seven felonies for misuse of user funds between FTX and Alameda. These crimes include wire fraud, commodity fraud, securities fraud and money laundering.

In 2023, she also testified in the criminal trial of Bankman-Fried — with whom she had a brief relationship — and Bankman-Fried was found guilty on all charges.

Next to Bankman-Fried, Ellison was one of the most well-known public faces of the FTX crash in November 2022; The stock market faced a liquidity crisis, the CEO resigned and the company filed for bankruptcy. Prosecutors said in a sentencing document in September that Ellison had faced intense “attention and harassment” from the public and the media.

“While public concern and criticism of the criminal behavior of a criminal or co-conspirator is understandable, Ellison has been through much more,” the U.S. government filing said.

“He was surrounded by crowds to comment and take photos outside the court, making it difficult for him to enter and exit safely, his physical appearance was frequently criticized, and he was ridiculed with memes and other content on social media.”

FTX co-founder Gary Wang is expected to be the last person to approach Judge Kaplan for sentencing. Like Singh, he also asked the court to count his sentence after pleading guilty and to “count time from the sentence” for his testimony in Bankman-Fried’s case. Wang’s sentence will be announced on November 20.
