Binance is Working to Rescue Imprisoned CEO Gambaryan
Binance CEO Richard Teng stated that they tried every legal and political means to bring Tigran Gambaryan from Nigeria to the USA due to his worsening health condition.
Emphasizing that the Binance team is working day and night to speed up this process, Teng stated that they have repeatedly appealed to the Nigerian government for the release of Gambaryan.
In his statement at the Token2049 conference in Singapore, Teng said that Gambaryan needed medical attention and was unjustly detained:
“We are constantly appealing to the Nigerian government for the release of our employee. He needs to return home and receive proper medical treatment. There’s no point in keeping it. She is being held unfairly and unjustly.”
Teng stated that a special task force within Binance is working around the clock to resolve this situation and is examining both legal and political avenues.
Emphasizing that the company’s priority is to bring Gambaryan back to the United States safely, Teng expressed his hope that the US government will also define Gambaryan as someone who is illegally detained.
Believing that this will speed up the process, Binance continues to appeal to the Nigerian government to release Gambaryan on humanitarian grounds.
Tigran Gambaryan’s health condition is deteriorating day by day. Gambaryan, who reportedly contracted malaria and suffered pneumonia twice during his detention in Nigeria, became unable to walk properly.
Teng stated that Gambaryan could not receive the necessary medical treatment and his condition was getting worse day by day. His fainting in court in May was recorded as a serious incident that proves this situation.
Gambaryan traveled to Nigeria in February as Binance’s head of financial crime compliance. Gambaryan, who was invited by the Nigerian government to address Binance’s compliance issues, was detained by Nigerian authorities after two meetings.
The talks, which initially proceeded professionally, reportedly became more hostile over time. Gambaryan is currently being held in Kuje Prison in Nigeria, known for its poor conditions.
In this process, in June, 12 US politicians called on President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Presidential Representative for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens to release Gambaryan.
Gambaryan’s mother, Knarik Gambaryan, also requested US officials to step up their efforts on September 18.
US politicians think that Gambaryan faces “unfounded” accusations such as money laundering and tax evasion. It is claimed that Nigerian officials made these accusations in order to extort money from Binance.
Although the release of Tigran Gambaryan is a priority for Binance, Richard Teng also stated that they want to contribute to the future economic transformation of Nigeria. As one of the largest crypto exchanges in Nigeria, Binance processes approximately 32% of Nigerians’ crypto transactions.
Nigeria ranks second in cryptocurrency adoption worldwide, according to a report published by Chainalysis on September 11.
