Banana Gun Hack: $2 Million Stolen!

Banana Gun Hack: $2 Million Stolen!

In recent days, users of Telegram-based cryptocurrency trading bot Banana Gun have experienced a total loss of approximately $2 million worth of digital assets. So far, at least 36 victims have been negatively affected by this situation.

Banana Gun is known as a platform that allows users to trade on popular blockchains such as Ethereum, Solana and Base. However, due to a security vulnerability on the platform, at least 11 attackers managed to steal a total of $1.9 million from users’ wallets.

Regarding this situation, Hakan Ünal, Senior Security Operations Center leader of Onchain security firm Cyvers, said, “We see that BananaGunBot wallets have been emptied. Our system points to approximately 11 attackers (potentially more) and approximately $1.9 million was stolen. “Hundreds of users have already been affected,” he said.

These statements show how comprehensive the attack was.

The details of the incident became clearer with the information shared by crypto detective Yannick Crypto. The attack coincides with a massive $230 million hack from WazirX two months ago.

Ünal emphasized that the incident does not indicate a wider smart contract vulnerability and said, “According to the research we have done so far, it does not appear to be a contract exploit. “There may be a situation where small amounts are stolen from users,” he added.

The fact that the number of victims is less than 40 indicates that the attacker was not able to break into the entire trading bot and only gained access to a certain number of accounts. This suggests that the attack was carried out against a specific target.

Ünal said, “There are fewer than 40 victims among more than 10,000 users and they are probably under management of $100 million. “Furthermore, the transaction data does not indicate a hack on their site,” he said.

The attack comes nearly two weeks after the famous crypto drain tool Angel Drainer returned online. This new and improved version has distributed hundreds of malicious applications. However, it remains unclear whether there is a connection between the Banana Gun Bot incident and Angel Drainer.

It is also rumored that North Korean hackers, especially the Lazarus Group, may start targeting Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based in the United States.

“Recently, the FBI issued a warning that North Korean hackers would target ETFs and try to steal money,” said Michael Pearl, vice president of GTM strategy at Onchain security firm Cyvers. All these ETFs basically store Bitcoin. “And I can definitely say that there was someone planning how to steal this,” he said.

This incident once again reveals how serious security problems can be in cryptocurrency trading. It is obvious that users should be more careful when making transactions on such platforms.

The world of crypto money, in addition to the opportunities it offers, also brings with it many risks. Therefore, it is critical for users to increase their security measures and be careful.
