Algorand Mocked Its Rivals: New Ad Shakes the Cryptocurrency World
Algorand Foundation is on the agenda with its new advertisement, which humorously refers to two of the biggest obstacles to the integration of cryptocurrencies into daily life: speed and transaction fees. The ad, published on May 23, makes its claim clearly with its slogan: "When blockchain meets the real world, there is only one winner."
The commercial video progresses through different scenarios faced by three customers as they head to the cash register to complete their shopping. In each scenario, the disadvantages of some of the most popular networks in the cryptocurrency world are conveyed to the viewer through the shopping experience. This approach allows the viewer to put themselves in the customers’ shoes and better understand the problems of cryptocurrencies in daily use.
In the first scene, the customer trying to pay with Bitcoin encounters time stopping at the cash register. The clerk at the cash register says he has to wait exactly 27 minutes for the transaction to be confirmed. This scene refers to the frequently criticized transaction confirmation time of the Bitcoin network, calling into question its usability in daily life. Bitcoin’s long waiting times are seen as one of the major obstacles to the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies. Waiting 27 minutes to buy a cup of coffee is not very attractive for cryptocurrency adoption.
The next customer is trying to pay with Ethereum, known for its smart contracts. However, when he made the payment, the clerk at the cash register told him that it was “peak network traffic” and therefore he had to pay a high transaction fee. The customer is forced to pay high transaction fees for a $112 product. This scene refers to the problem of increasing transaction fees of the Ethereum network in recent years. The Ethereum network has faced high transaction fees due to the increasing number of transactions with the popularity of smart contracts. This situation has become a factor that drives both investors and daily users away from the Ethereum network.
The most striking scene of the advertisement is with the Solana user, played by Algorand’s CTO John Woods. When Woods tries to complete his purchase, he sees that his transactions keep failing. This scene refers to the outages that the Solana network has experienced in the past. The Solana network faced questions about reliability due to outages in 2021 and 2022. Failure of transactions when trying to pay with a cryptocurrency not only creates security concerns for users, but also causes cryptocurrencies to be perceived as less reliable than traditional payment methods.
In the finale of the commercial, entrepreneur Anthony Scaramucci appears on stage. Scaramucci is known as one of Algorand’s supporters. In the ad, Scaramucci grabs viewers’ attention by asking how he can join the Algorand queue. In the last scene of the commercial, it is shown that customers shopping in other lanes complete their transactions quickly and with almost no transaction fees. With this scene, the advantages of the Algorand network such as speed and low transaction fees are emphasized to the audience. Algorand Foundation clearly reveals the message that the advertisement wants to give: When it comes to using crypto money in daily life, networks that offer fast and low transaction fees stand out.
The ad, which has received more than 740,000 views since its publication, has sparked controversy in the cryptocurrency community. While some users liked the humorous approach of the ad, others criticized the Algorand Foundation’s aggressive attitude towards its competitors. However, it is not yet clear whether the advertisement has achieved its main purpose. In the cryptocurrency market, where competition is heating up, this advertisement of the Algorand Foundation sparked discussions and once again reminded the industry of the importance of speed and transaction fees for the integration of cryptocurrencies into daily life.
